Pastor's Letter for January 2021
January 5, 2021, 11:00 AM

Family is so vital for health and vitality in life. The Trinity is the true first family where the members serve each other and give each other glory. The family of the Triune God created the earth and was introduced into the paradise of the garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were called to commune with God, to build the family of God and to spread paradise throughout the entire earth. Life, abundant life and ultimately paradise happens when the members of the family live in faith and devotion to each other.

When sin entered the world, Adam and Eve were kicked out of paradise. But God called the heroes of faith to serve him again. People like Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses and the prophets were all called into the family of God. Through them devotion to God returned to earth; and with it came promise of paradise that comes from communion with God.

At the birth of Jesus, the family of God on earth became real in an even more powerful way than it had since the Garden of Eden. God called Mary and Joseph into his family. He made them a family giving them the responsibility to serve each other faithfully and together serve as protective parents to Jesus, the eternal son, the incarnate word of God. The one they protected would give his life to save the sinful people that God loved so that they could spend eternity as part of his family.

  1. the birth of Christ faithful service had to continue for life to flow and be protected. The challenges the family of Joseph, Mary and Jesus faced were extreme. In addition to such crucial threats, Mary and Joseph faced the family responsibility to provide for their children and raise them in faith. The unity and fruitfulness of Mary and Joseph’s family is breathtaking. They stayed faithful and together as a fruitful family even in the face of incredible adversity.

Living faithfully as the family of God makes us fruitful and brings paradise to earth. Jesus lived in the paradise of the Trinity, coming to earth to bring God’s children into his family. On his ascension, Jesus returned to the paradise of the heavenly trinity and made paradise the destination of all who live by faith as part of God’s family.

Sometimes people express concerns about the future of our congregation. What will happen in 3, 5, 10 years given the age and vitality of the body that we see today? You could ask the same question about your nation, your town, your family and the church in general? Where can, abundant life, vitality and even paradise be found? Why have we strived so hard in life and found so little enduring fruit?

The Apostle Paul put his finger on our problem in 2Co 11:3 when he said, “I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpents cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.”

Mary, Joseph and Jesus himself were purely devoted to God just as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are purely devoted to each other. The paradise we seek is found through faithful life in the family of God.

Sincere and pure devotion to God is not possible through human effort. It is only possible with the power of God. When we look to our present and our future, where does help come from? It comes in the name of the Lord (Psalm 121:1). In the help we need to defeat the anxiety for the future comes from God who will not leave us or forsake us. When we seek Him in pure devotion, The Father gives us life, hope and peace because we are His children. With the gifts He gives us, we will be able to minister to others as he leads, in our families, our church, and our community.

We should have great hope in our future, but the only solid Rock of our hope is the love and faithfulness of the Lord.

Happy New Year!!
